Halo Top "Healthy" Ice Cream: Does it Live Up to the Hype?
9:51 AM
If you've got your finger on the pulse of the low-carb world, it's likely you have heard of the wonders of Halo Top ice cream.
I'm not gonna lie, it sounded too good to be true at first. A low-calorie, high-protein, and low-carb ice cream made with all-natural ingredients that is supposed to actually taste like ice cream. Well, I've tried four flavors so far, and I am just full of opinions!
I'm not gonna lie, it sounded too good to be true at first. A low-calorie, high-protein, and low-carb ice cream made with all-natural ingredients that is supposed to actually taste like ice cream. Well, I've tried four flavors so far, and I am just full of opinions!
These are the flavors I've taste-tested: Chocolate Mocha Chip, Cookies and Cream, Birthday Cake, and Sea Salt Caramel. Below are my non-sponsored, honest reviews of these four varieties. Because I know people can be skeptical of products that claim to be all the things that Halo Top does.
Firstly: my favorite, Sea Salt Caramel. Guys, this flavor is amazing. But it's not just the flavor, it's the texture. Creamy and velvety and not at all icy or watery. It looks like ice cream on the spoon, and feels just like ice cream in your mouth. I literally cannot taste the difference between this and regular ice cream. It doesn't skimp on the saltiness to balance the sweet. Halo Top really hit it out of the park on this one. All this and low carb? Yep. Believe it. A+.
Cookies and Cream: This one has close to the same texture as Salted Caramel, but the flavor isn't as intense. It's still good, but it's more like a vanilla with generic chocolate cookie pieces. And the pieces are very small. That being said, if you don't compare it to the Cookies and Cream ice creams that use Oreo or the like, it's still really tasty. I wouldn't kick it out of bed, is what I'm saying. Solid B.
Chocolate Mocha Chip: The flavor is spot on. Coffee and chocolate with a tiny satisfying crunch. The texture is a little different, in that it seems to freeze harder than the others. So you have to think ahead and sit it out a while before you want to eat it. However, once you do this, it melts back into the creamy texture that the others have. Yum! A- (the minus is for the inconvenience of having to sit it out.)
Birthday Cake: I was pretty excited about this one, but it must be really difficult to replicate the flavor of a birthday party in your mouth. It doesn't quite get there, plus there seems to be a slight aftertaste that I can't place. All in all, though, the texture is pleasing, and the sprinkles are fun, even though I'm usually not a fan of sprinkles. (Birthday Party ice cream is one exception.) I'm giving this one a C+.
Last thought: if you've tried lots of ice cream that is supposedly "healthy", you know that they're not that great. But somehow Halo Top managed to do it. Especially the Sea Salt Caramel. Seriously. Check that stuff out. I personally plan on trying the rest of the varieties very soon!
Update: Tried the Candy Bar kind last night. REALLY GOOD. It seems a tad bit icier than a couple of the other creamier ones, but the texture of the candy bar pieces (even though they're smallish) makes it feel like you're eating a DQ Blizzard, which is nice, considering you're getting like 700 fewer calories. *I didn't really math that. Just a guesstimate*. Pumpkin Pie is next!
